Why Do You Use Combinations In Boxing?

A combination is a carefully planned series of punches, combined with footwork and reactive defences, which you may use in the ring to attack your opponent. As pressure heightens in the ring, boxers tend to stick to what they know best - the skills, reflexes and instincts they picked up during their training. By turning combinations into muscle memory, fighters can easily analyse a given situation in the ring and apply the combination best suited to the conditions at hand, leaving their focus to neutralising their opponent’s own offensive and defensive strategies.
The main problem that most beginners face when training with combinations is their focus on power, speed and complexity, as opposed to technique. Combinations require a tremendous amount of balance, focus, and agility, so if one of your punches isn’t quite up to scratch, it might throw off the speed and overall effectiveness of the combination.
That’s why at Basic Reflex, we focus on perfecting each punch before rolling out the fancy combinations, teaching students step-by-step and fixing each mistake along the way. We move beyond learning punches statically, testing the fighter’s ability to distance themselves from their opponent and react to unique scenarios. Repetition and practice are key. Once you master the fundamentals, you’ll find learning combinations a whole lot easier.
